The deployment of the ETF-TEL project will include the provision of the following in each of the selected schools.
- 5 Teachers Laptops;
- Broad Band Internet Connectivity delivered on a VSAT Platform;
- A Wireless Mesh Network;
- Computer Based Training;
- Rich Online Educational Content
Software Stack
Operating System
Mandriva Linux for the Classmate PC is a full product, based on Mandriva Linux and the Mandriva Flash technology. The particulars of the Mandriva Linux operating system are:
- A full product, with no software limits, every available free open source software package can be used without additional fees (access to tens of thousands of valuable free software programs) exclusive with a simplified user interface suitable for students and new computer.
- Optimized to run on Flash memory, thanks to the Mandriva Flash technology. This will prevent the storage memory from wearing out. The flash is 1GB flash unit.
- A complete suite of Open Source software included in the standard license, i.e OpenOffice, Gimp (Photo shop alternative), etc.
- An OS simplified licensing and update, no software lock issues to deal with, i.e no administrative burden
- A continuously uptodate product, Mandriva Linux for CMPC is based on the current release, not on an endoflife version like XP
Educational Software Content
Skoool.ng
Skoool.ng to be launched fully in December is an innovative concept in elearning solutions. It is an online server of digital content that cuts across over seven key subject areas. The content has been reviewed and approved by the NERDC. The teachers at regular intervals can download content from the website and share same with students during classroom exercises. The rich multimedia content affords pupils new and exciting perception of previously vague subject areas. To visit click here.
Brain Friend
Brain friend has been developed by Nigerians specifically for the Nigerian student. It covers (30) thirty subjects in the school curriculum from Primary 4 – Senior Secondary 3. It includes brainteasers, aptitude tests, sample JAMB, SSCE, JSCE and First School Leaving Certificate questions.
Training
Intel Foundation provides up to 100 million Naira annually for capacity building. There is a plan to train 10M (Ten million) teachers by 2011 world wide and 150,000 teachers in Nigeria in 5 years. This effort is ongoing. The Intel teach program for teachers:
- Has been developed by educators for educators;
- Increases the use of technical activities with students;
- Increases the use of technical for lesson planning and preparation;
- Increases the use of teaching with project based approaches
- Trains teachers on how to adopt the curriculum in an ICT environment.
The Intel teach program has six levels:
- Skills for success; this assumes that the teacher has basic ICT skills
- Getting Started; training on basic ICT skills, how to relate their curriculum and adapt it for teaching;
- Essential course;
- Essentials on line;
- Thinking and technology course;
- Advanced on line course;
- Leadership forum course.
Training levels for the Intel teach programme
- Senior trainers—There are about 10 Senior trainers in Nigeria. These are trainers who have been trained in India, Malaysia by Intel.
- Master teachers—There are over (40) forty master teachers in Nigeria. The master teachers train the participant teachers. These trainers are spread all over the country.
- Participant teachers—These teachers are trained on how to deliver the 1:1 e learning environment, adaptation of the curriculum and lesson planning.
The training for teachers on the ETFTEL project will be done by the senior and master trainers. The identified technology champions in the selected beneficiary schools will be trained. Zonal training centers will be set up for the training and the technology champions will have part of their logistics cost borne by the TSC and Intel.
